Top tips for returning to the gym after lockdown
It’s the message we’ve been craving, and we know you can’t wait to return to your regular training routine. But during the lockdown, many of us noticed a significant change in our fitness levels – home training in the front room, weight training in the garage and running on the streets as opposed to the treadmill.
If you arrive late at the gym, things will be a little different – it depends on your fitness level and gym. For example, since reopening, many facilities have introduced non-contact entry, extensive and frequent cleaning, self-cleaning stations and hand-washing stations.
We are sharing some great tips here to make the training way easier when reopening the gym:
Maintain Social Distancing – Most gyms have been redesigned and clearly marked for your safe use. To ensure that there is a safe space of 2 meters between you and other members, it is expected that you will clean it before and after use.
The number of people in the gym will also be controlled, making sure it doesn’t get too busy, so it’s a good idea to plan your sessions (avoiding the best of times). There will always be a backup plan in case someone else uses the device you want – you can always come back when it’s free.
Always warm up before starting a session – Warming up is often unnoticed and unforgettable, but by taking the time to stretch, you can avoid injuries by loosening your joints and pumping blood to your muscles.
Whether you train your arms, legs, chest or core, make time for a warm-up — especially when returning to the gym after a few months of work at home. Do not work too hard. You must walk before you run, so give yourself a rest and always make time for a cooldown!
Get good sleep – The amount of sleep you need varies from person to person – depending on lifestyle, diet, training program and genetics – Adults are recommended to get 7-9 hours of sleep a night.
Even if you lock out completely or miss training, exercising in the gym can be difficult. So it is important to make sure that your body gets what is left and needs to recover.
Don’t forget your padlock—okay, so after months of training at home, make sure you have all the essentials ready in your gym bag. This includes a towel, extra clothes change, drinking bottle / game, snacks, anti band.
Another thing to remember to take with you before heading to the gym is your lock (and this is important if you have one). Without it, you will not be able to lock your belongings and rest knowing that they are safe.
